Diary: Socioeconomic inequality

That’s what we’re meant to call the area covered by the Government’s proposals for a public sector duty that would address class discrimination. Diary: Class discrimination

Harriet Harman, the Minister for Women and Equality, created quite a stir in January when, at the time of the publication of the Government White Paper New Opportunities: Fair Chances for the Future, she seemingly briefed columnist Polly Toynbee of The Guardian that “the Government will create a new over-arching law creating a duty on the whole public sector to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor. This single legal duty will stand as the main frame from which all other equality legislation flows.”
