Diary: The private lives of judges

How relevant is the religious background or sexual orientation of our judges? Lord Carey suggests in his witness statement in the McFarlane case that the Court of Appeal judges who decided Ladele and Eweida should no longer sit in similar cases because of their “lack of knowledge about the Christian faith”. Since, I am reliably informed, two of the three judges in Ladele and the lead judge in Eweida are of Jewish ethnicity, Lord Carey’s comment can be seen as having rather sinister undertones.

Equality Act gets Royal Assent

The Equality Act 2010 received Royal Assent on 8 April 2010. The final Act has 218 clauses and 28 schedules. Most of the Act is expected to come into force on 1 October 2010, but commencement orders will not be laid until Parliament reconvenes after the general election.
