Default retirement age to go
The Government has published a consultation document announcing that the national default retirement age (DRA) of 65 is to be abolished next year. Under its proposals, no new retirement notices under the statutory procedure will be valid from 6 April 2011. Statutory grievance procedure comes to an end
The Employment Act 2008 comes into force on 6 April 2009, and with it, the repeal of the statutory grievance procedure takes effect. This means that there will no longer be a requirement for employees to comply with the statutory grievance procedure before being allowed to bring a discrimination or equal pay claim. Indirect disability discrimination proposed
The Government is proposing to replace the concept of disability-related discrimination in the Disability Discrimination Act with new provisions which will make it unlawful to indirectly discriminate on grounds of disability.

Race Relations Act now covers deterred applicants
The Government has made a small amendment to the definition of indirect discrimination in the Race Relations Act.
